The Primary PE and Sport Premium was launched by the government in April 2013. It is ring-fenced funding to be used by the school to improve the quality and breadth of our PE, sport and physical activity provision.
The national vision is for:
All pupils leaving primary school [to be] physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:
- hire specialist P.E. teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during P.E. lessons
- support and involve the least active children by running after-school sports clubs and holiday clubs
- provide resources and training courses in P.E. and sport for teachers
- run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games.
- run sports activities with other schools

Sustainability
At Handale Primary School, high-quality PE provision will be sustained through the effective use of Sport Premium funding to strengthen resources, partnerships and pupil experiences, ensuring long-term impact on health and well-being.
Investment in PE equipment supports high-quality provision across PE lessons, breaktimes and after-school clubs. New resources are carefully selected to link directly to the curriculum, allowing pupils to practise and apply skills throughout the school day and encouraging active lifestyles beyond timetabled PE.
Our partnership with East Cleveland Sports Partnership plays a key role in sustaining school sport. This ensures pupils across all year groups can access competitive opportunities outside of school, applying skills learnt through high-quality PE provision. The partnership also supports the training of Sports Leaders, enabling pupils to lead activities and competitions during playtimes and events. Leadership skills are sustained year on year as trained leaders support and develop the next cohort, embedding a culture of participation and responsibility.
Sport Premium funding also supports a range of after-school clubs, increasing participation and providing further opportunities for skill development and enjoyment. Swimming provision is prioritised to ensure pupils develop essential life skills, water confidence and safety awareness.
Pupils benefit from enriching opportunities such as Sports Week and Healthy Lifestyles Week, promoting a wide range of sports, physical activity and understanding of healthy living. Ongoing CPD, planning and assessment support ensures staff confidence and consistency in PE delivery.
This plan will be reviewed in June 2027.
